Meet Our Take the Stagers – Etobicoke Musical Productions

Take the Stage

On October 6, four local community theatre and music groups are banding together to help raise money in support of Canadian Musical Theatre. At the first Annual Take The Stage fundraiser, they will battle for the ultimate prize in musical theatre: The Spotlight Award! In a few short hours, they will learn a breakout musical theatre song under the direction of world-renowned theatre stars. Every Monday until then, we’ll bring you a short interview with each team so you can find out why they have decided to Take the Stage!

Today, we present the Etobicoke Musical Productions who will be coached by none other than Sharron Matthews! More

Amiel Gladstone’s Triple Threat

Amiel Gladstone, founder of Victoria’s Theatre SKAM and renowned playwright and director, is a true visionary in staging works which combine music, storytelling and movement. Naturally, he was the perfect fit to pioneer Do You Want What I Have Got? A Craigslist Cantatawhich will be touring to Edmonton and Alberta in the winter. In interviewing him, we discovered that Amiel has quite the encyclopedia of musical theatre knowledge under his belt, and this is what he had to share with us:

What musical’s score will you always remember?

I love the music in She Loves Me. It’s so catchy and romantic. It feels like pure musical theatre magic, you know? Delightful and so fun.

Producing Notes – Our Strongest Suit

I am big fan of Broadway producer Ken Davenport and his blog “The Producer’s Perspective”. For those interested in the nuts and bolts of producing commercial theatre, his daily thoughts are refreshing and thought-provoking.

As we were putting the final touches on our season brochure, Ken published a timely blog on show logos. Ken felt that regional productions of shows that have had a commercial life in New York should use the original logos. For the regional theatres, it provides a ‘brand’ that has already proven successful, and has already had millions of dollars pumped into its promotion.

As a company that spends a good chunk of change on figuring out and creating imagery for each show in our season, it caused me to take pause and consider my own feelings on the matter. More

Thomas Tony Tuesdays – 9 to 5

This week I am going to cheat a little bit.  The performance I have chosen is not from the actual Tony Awards broadcast but it is from the pre-broadcast…so that counts…right? More
