Call For Submissions: General Auditions – UnCovered Series
To download this submission call as a PDF, click here.
The Musical Stage Company is Canada’s largest and leading charitable musical theatre organization. Our musical productions – including award-winning contemporary musicals, world premieres, and concerts – are seen live by 30,000 people over the 80+ nights that we are onstage annually. We are looking to meet an expanded network of performers, both emerging and established.
The Musical Stage Company is currently accepting submissions for General Auditions for our UnCovered series. This is not specifically a work session for UnCovered 2025; it is a work session for the UnCovered series overall. The nature of each UnCovered concert changes based on that year’s creative team, performers, and focal songbook. We’re using Generals to learn about performers who might be a fit for UnCovered concerts far into the future, in addition to the current year.
Deadline to Submit: February 17, 2025
Audition Date: March 5, 2025 (in-person in Toronto, ON)
The Musical Stage Company prioritizes adaptability and a human-centric work environment. If you require an accommodation to make your submission, or if you have any questions/concerns about the submission process, please email Associate Producer, Emma Westray at submissions@musicalstagecompany.com, or call her at 416-927-7880 ext. 243.
We request that no agent packages be sent as we are interested in experiencing the artist’s individual voice through their Artist Statement. Agents are still welcome to submit clients for specific shows at any time.
Please submit:
- A brief Artist Statement (250 words max for written statements or a 1 minute max video) that introduces you as an artist. We encourage you to express yourself in whatever way you are most comfortable with. Include a list of instruments that you play (if any) and your level of proficiency for each instrument.
- Upload your resume (PDF titled “[YOUR NAME] Resume”)
- Upload your headshot (JPG or PDF titled “[YOUR NAME] Headshot”)
Submission Guidelines:
- Please fill out the Submission Form no later than 5:00 pm ET on February 17, 2025. Please follow the form’s instructions to upload your Artist Statement (written or video), Resume, and Headshot.
- We especially encourage folks who identify as Black, Indigenous, People of the Global Majority, LGBTQ2S+, d/Deaf, Mad, Disabled/People with Disabilities, and/or Neurodiverse to submit. Artists who we have not previously met will also be prioritized.
About the Audition Process:
Selected artists will be invited to an audition slot. If you are invited to an audition, you will be asked to prepare:
- One contemporary/popular song that you feel conveys your ability to tell a story and showcase your individuality, with another contrasting contemporary/popular song excerpt (32 bars) as a second option. We may only have time to do exploration work on one of the songs, but we may hear both.
- The song will ideally be a popular music song (not a song from a musical) with at least some narrative element to the text that allow the song to lend itself to interpretation and emotional excavation.
- Songs should focus on conveying story, emotion, and truth through the singing voice and performance Interpreting and/or re-arranging the song in a way that is unique to you as a performer and person.
- An accompanist will be present.
- If you’re bringing your own instrument and accompanying yourself, we may, on redirect/deeper exploration, ask if we can play the song as accompaniment for you.
- You may, if you wish, bring an accompanist with you (though it is absolutely not a requirement or expectation). We’re not able to offer your accompanist compensation for their time. Please note that for any redirects and rearrangement work, we may ask to accompany you for that work (rather than your accompanist).
Due to the high volume of submissions, we will only contact artists who are invited to audition.
