Triple Threat: Jake Epstein

Get to know some of our favourite artists! Triple Threat is an annual feature that reveals which musicals and musical experiences left lasting impressions on the performers involved in The Musical Stage Company’s UnCovered Concert series. Up first is Jake Epstein!

Jake is a returning UnCovered favourite and we’re thrilled to have him back for UnCovered: Dylan & Springsteen. Jake’s recent credits include on Broadway: Beautiful: The Carole King Musical (original Gerry Goffin); Spider-Man (Peter Parker/Spider-Man). First National Tours: Spring Awakening (Melchior); American Idiot (Will). Off-Broadway: Straight. Selected Toronto Theatre: Therefore Choose Life (HGJT, co-writer); Billy Elliot: The Musical (Mirvish); Dog Sees God (Michael Rubinoff); Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast (Ross Petty); Dani Girl (Talk is Free). On television, Jake is known for having played Craig on Degrassi (Gemini Award), but most recently can be seen in Designated Survivor and Suits

What is your favourite musical?

Cabaret

 

What is your guilty pleasure musical?

Titanic the Musical (for sure)

When was the first time that you ever performed? 

My first major role was playing the Artful Dodger in Oliver! at the Princess of Wales Theatre when I was 12.

What are some of the roles you played in high school?

I played Harold Hill in The Music Man and the Emcee in Cabaret. Two of the greatest roles you can play!
 

What is your dream role that you’ll (probably) never get to play?

Girl in Once or maybe Mufasa in The Lion King. 
 
 
 

Who is your biggest inspiration as a performer?

I’ve got so many huge inspirations- and they change every day! Brian D’Arcy James, Michael Cerveris, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hanks, Lin Manuel-Miranda, Mike Birbiglia, Gabi Epstein… to name a few.
 

Who would you love to share the stage with (dead or alive)?

Paul McCartney
 

 

What movie or book would you love to see turned into a musical?

I’m a much bigger fan of musicals with original stories! But if I had to pick off the top of my head, I’d love to see either The Mask or Liar Liar (or another Jim Carey film from the 90’s) turned into a musical comedy. 
 
 

What album (musical theatre or not) do you know word for word, front to back?

Big the Musical. Yup.
 

What band or singer would you love to tackle in an UnCovered concert?

Pink Floyd
